If you are a Post Graduate or B. Tech BIOTECHNOLOGY in any discipline of LIFE SCIENCES exploring Research/Teaching options, the likelihood is that you were born around the 80’s. In the less-than-twenty five years you've been alive, there have b een remarkable advances in scientific knowledge, technology and medicine practices. To name just a few: 1981 Hewlett-Packard invented the silicon 32bit chip; 1982 Robert Jarvik developed the first artificial heart; 1985 Optronics in England invented the image digitizer; 1986 Alec Jeffreys discovered DNA fingerprinting; 2003 Human Genome was decoded.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.
Admission to postgraduate programmes with MHRD and some other government scholarship/assistantship at engineering colleges/institutes in the country are open to those who qualify through GATE. GATE qualified candidates with Bachelor's degree in BIOTECHNOLOGY or Master's degree in any branch of Science /Doctoral programmes in LIFE SCIENCES, BIOTECHNOLOGY, as well as for Doctoral programmes in relevant branches of Science. To avail the scholarship, the candidate must secure admission to such a postgraduate programme, as per the prevailing procedure of the admitting institution. GATE qualification, however required for candidates with Master's degree in B.Tech. BIOTECHNOLOGY, M.Sc. Biotechnology or Life Sciences who may be seeking scholarship/ assistantship for relevant doctoral programmes.
Some institutions specify GATE as the mandatory qualification even for admission of self-financing students to postgraduate programmes. GATE qualified candidates are also eligible for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories and CSIR sponsored projects. Some government organizations prescribe GATE qualification as a requirement for applying to the post of a Scientist / Engineer.
While one laboratory, or one organization, or occasionally one person is usually given the credit for such major advances, but their discoveries and advances are build on the contributions of thousands of scientists at colleges and universities, in private and government-sponsored laboratories around the world.
